I’ve noticed quite a few of these ‘bumble bees’ in the
garden this spring but couldn’t work out which species it was. It is mostly
black in colour, flies low & fast & when it hovers near flowers it shows
a long protruding tongue. It is in fact a ‘hairy footed flower bee’ which is
only on the wing in spring & likes to make its nest in the soft mortar of
chimney stacks. The female is brown in colour.
